PULLMAN, Wash. (March 4, 2023) – Jacob Morrow homered, collected four hits and drove in four runs as Washington State clinched its home-opening series against Southern Indiana with a 12-5 victory in front for 1,100 fans at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars notched their fifth straight win and improved to 9-1, matching their best start since 2021 after erasing a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the third and pulled aways with two in the sixth and four in the seventh. Jacob McKeon recorded two hits and scored three times, Sam Brown homered for the second straight game and drove in three while Bryce Matthews had two hits with two RBI and two runs scored.

Starter Caden Kaelber matched a career-high with eight strikeouts but reliever Connor Wilford picked up his first collegiate win with 2.2 innings of work.

Southern Indiana dropped to 5-5 overall.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Southern Indiana struck first with a two-run home run to left field in the second inning and pushed their lead to 3-0 with a first-and-third double steal. WSU answered with four runs in their half of the third inning as Morrow launched a 1-0 pitch 433 feet to left field for a two-run home run and Matthews later pulled a single through the right side to plate two runs for a 4-3 Cougar lead.

In the fifth, Greg Fuchs singled back up the middle and later scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 5-3. Brown made it a 7-3 in the sixth inning with a long two-run home run to right-centerfield for the second straight game.

WSU put the game away with four runs in the seventh after Matthews pulled a one-out triple down the right field line and later scored on a Jacob Harvey single. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded Morrow drove in two more runs with a two-run double off the wall in left-centerfield and Elijah Hainline capped the scoring with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
