WSU Drops Finale at Air Force, Win Sixth Straight Series

WSU won the first games of the series to clinch its sixth-straight series win for the first time since 1995. The Cougars 15 conference wins are the most since 2010, the 14 road wins are the third-most in a season since 2000 and the seven series wins this season are the most since 2017.

The Cougars (27-24, 15-9 Mountain West) took a 9-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning before the Falcons (24-24, 15-9 Mountain West) used five hits, two walks and hit-by-pitch to score five runs in the frame capped by a bases-loaded RBI-single up the middle.

Trevor Smith and Max Hartman each recorded three hits while Hartman drove in four runs. Gavin Roy and Kyler Northrop each tallied two hits while starter Luke Meyers worked six innings.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Air Force used three straight two out hits capped by a three-run home run for a second-inning lead but the Cougars answered in the fourth. Smith, Roy and Hartman each recorded hits to start the fourth as Hartman's single back up the middle scored Smith and Roy. A Ryan Skjonsby RBI-sacrifice fly tied it at three. WSU took a 5-3 lead an inning later after Smith's RBI-single down the right field line and another run scored on a groundball double play.

Meyers settled in a posted three straight scoreless frames before ending his day with a fly out in the sixth inning. The Cougars came right back with a three-run seventh inning as Smith and Roy delivered RBI-singles to right field before Hartman doubled home a run off the left field wall for an 8-4 lead.

Hartman singled home a run in the ninth but the Falcons rallied with five runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Gavin Roy walked in the 1st to extend his on-base streak to 38 games, tied for 3rd-longest on-base streak in WSU history (Jason Freeman, 2005)
Trevor Smith put down bunt single in the 4th to extend his hitting streak to 9 games and on-base streak to 11 games
Matt Priest doubled in the 4th to extend his hitting streak to 10 games
Kyler Northrop singled in the 5th to extend his on-base streak to 33 games, tied for 8th-longest in WSU history
