Cougars Win the Mountain West Tournament Championship

Washington State wins its first conference title since winning the Pac-10 North in 1995, its first overall conference title since winning the 1976 Pac-8 title and earns its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2010. The Cougars record their 30th win for the first time since 2010.
San Diego State won the first game of the day 9-2 to force the winner-take-all game where the Cougars collected 14 hits and used three pitchers. SDSU, the regular season champions, used six pitchers.
The Cougars rallied from a 4-3 deficit with a three-run fifth inning, a run in the sixth and seven more in the seventh to win by the ten-run rule. Eight Cougars recorded hits led by Max Hartman who tallied three hits with four RBI, three runs scored and hit a three-run homer. Trevor Smith drove in three runs, Gavin Roy scored three times, Dustin Robinson doubled twice and drove in two runs and Ryan Skjonsby drove in three runs.
Cougar reliever Scott Rienguette earned with win with a 3.2 scoreless innings and six strikeouts.
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the first, Roy and Hartman reached with bunt singles before Priest scored Roy with a ground-rule double to right-centerfield. Hartman later scored on a Dustin Robinson RBI-fielder's choice. The Aztecs answered with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the frame and later took a 4-3 lead with a run on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
In the fifth, Roy singled and Hartman was hit by a pitch and one batter later, Dustin Robinson doubled to right-centerfield to tie the game. Skjonsby followed with an opposite-field two-run double to left-centerfield for a 6-5 lead.
Trevor Smith added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and the Cougars blew things open with seven in the seventh. Cam Macleod singled home a run, Smith doubled down the right field line to score two more and Hartman capped the scoring with a three-run homer to right field.
In the bottom of the seventh, SDSU had a leadoff single, had a fly out to centerfield and Rienguette ended it with a 5-4-3 double play.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Gavin Roy reached on a bunt single in the 1st to extend his on-base streak to 43 games, tying the school record set by Kyle Manzardo in 2019-21
Matt Priest doubled in the 7th to extend his hitting streak to 16 games
Trevor Smith singled in 6th to extend his on-base streak to 15 games and hitting streak to 13 games
Gavin Roy was hit by a pitch in the second inning to break the school single-season record and finished with 109 after Hartman was hit by a pitch in the fifth.
