SDSU Takes Game One, Forces Rematch with Cougars

MESA, Ariz. (May 24, 2026) – Washington State dropped a 9-2 decision to San Diego State, forcing an if necessary Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship game later Sunday afternoon at Sloan Park.

The winner of Sunday afternoon's final game will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

WSU (29-26) received a solid effort on the mound from starter Brock Blatter who worked a career-high five innings, allowed two earned runs and struck out one. Matt Priest recorded two hits while Gavin Roy and Mason Pirello each doubled. Both Ryan Skjonsby and Kyler Northrop drove in a run.

San Diego State forced the if necessary game with two runs in the first, another in the third and backed an impressive start by Drew Talavs who fired 5.2 scoreless innings.

SDSU plated a pair of runs in the first inning as a leadoff hit-by-pitch, single to right-centerfield came around to score on an RBI-groundout and a bad-hop fielding error allowed the second run to score a batter later. The Aztecs added a run on a sacrifice fly in the third to push the lead to 3-0.

The Cougars were kept off balance by SDSU starter Drew Talavs who fired 5.2 scoreless innings before Trevor Smith pulled a single off the first baseman and Roy pulled a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third. Following a pitching change, SDSU ended the threat with a strikeout.
