New Mexico Rallies in Late Innings To Even Series

PULLMAN, Wash. (April 25, 2026) – Washington State loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning but the rally was held off in a 4-3 defeat to New Mexico at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday evening.

The Cougars (22-21, 10-7 Mountain West) loaded the bases after a pair of hit-by-pitches and a walk before New Mexico ended the rally with a strikeout. UNM (25-16, 10-6-1 Mountain West) took the lead with a two-out RBI high-chopped single over the third baseman in the top of the ninth.

Ryan Skjonsby homered for the second time in the series, his team-leading eighth of the season while Gavin Roy walked in the ninth to extend his on-base streak to 30 games, tied for the ninth-longest streak in program history.

The Cougars built a 3-1 lead after Skjonsby's solo homer in the sixth but UNM tied the game with two runs in the seventh before pushing across the go-ahead run in the ninth.

Matt Priest singled and drove in two runs while Max Hartman, singled, scored a run and stole his team-leading 16th base of the season. Cougar starter Griffin Smith worked six innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits, struck out five.
