Lewis Fires Complete Game, WSU Takes Opener from Fresno State
May 01, 2026 | Baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. (May 1, 2026) – Nick Lewis fired a complete game and Max Hartman broke the school record with his eighth triple of the season in Washington State's 5-1 victory over Fresno State in the series-opener at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday evening.
Â
The Cougars (24-21, 12-7 Mountain West) saw Lewis strike out five and allow just one unearned run on five hits in his first career complete game, and first for WSU this season, to earn his team-leading seventh-win of the season. Lewis' seven wins are the most since 2015; Joe Pistorese had eight and Matt Bower recorded seven.
Â
Hartman collected three hits, walked and his first-inning RBI-triple was his eighth of the season, breaking the WSU single-season record for triples that was shared by Dave Jones (1959), Andy Alvis (1980), Greg Monday (1983) and Greg Barton (1984).
Â
Matt Priest, Cam Macleod and Kyler Northrop each recorded two hits for the Cougars who scored twice in the first and twice more in the third to back Lewis who allowed just the unearned run in the third.
Â
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
The Cougars struck for two in the first as Trevor Smith led off the game with a double to right-centerfield and came home on Hartman's record-setting RBI-triple off the left field wall. Hartman scored on a Matt Priest infield single to shortstop.
Â
Fresno State scored a run on a WSU throwing error but the Cougars came right back with another two runs in their half of the third on a Dustin Robinson RBI-double and an Ollie Obenour RBI-ground ball for a 4-1 advantage.
Â
Lewis worked around the unearned run in the third and didn't allow another runner to reach second until the seventh. FSU put runners on second and third with two outs in the eighth but Lewis induced a ground ball to Ryan Skjonsby at first base who made a backhand stop in the hole and flipped to Lewis covering at first for the third out.
Â
In the ninth, Lewis worked around a one-out single and ended the game with a fly out for WSU's first complete game since Griffin Smith beat UNLV last season.
Â
