Cougars Ninth-Inning Rally Held Off, Win Fifth Straight Series

PULLMAN, Wash. (May 3, 2026) – Washington State put the tying run second in the ninth inning but the comeback was held off in a 5-4 loss to Fresno State at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars dropped to 25-22 overall and 13-8 in conference play but won their fifth straight weekend series, the first such streak since 1999. Fresno State dropped to 13-31-1 overall and 2-15-1 in conference play.

Max Hartman and Dustin Robinson each collected two hits while Matt Priest drove in three runs. The Cougars tied things at four in the eighth after a Ryan Skjonsby sacrifice fly and Mason Pirello delivered a pinch-hit double in the ninth inning but FSU ended the comeback with a fly out to centerfield and strikeout.

FSU used a two-out single in the ninth, a stolen base and error to put the runner on third and a two-out RBI-single to take the lead.
