PULLMAN, Wash. (May 3, 2026) – Washington State put the tying run second in the ninth inning but the comeback was held off in a 5-4 loss to Fresno State at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars dropped to 25-22 overall and 13-8 in conference play but won their fifth straight weekend series, the first such streak since 1999. Fresno State dropped to 13-31-1 overall and 2-15-1 in conference play.

Max Hartman and Dustin Robinson each collected two hits while Matt Priest drove in three runs. The Cougars tied things at four in the eighth after a Ryan Skjonsby sacrifice fly and Mason Pirello delivered a pinch-hit double in the ninth inning but FSU ended the comeback with a fly out to centerfield and strikeout.

FSU used a two-out single in the ninth, a stolen base and error to put the runner on third and a two-out RBI-single to take the lead.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Trevor Smith gave the Cougars and early game, leading off the 1^st with an opposite-field single to left-centerfield, moved to second on Max Hartman's bunt single and scored on a Matt Priest sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Fresno State's first baserunner was a walk in the third and followed with an opposite-field two-run homer to right field for a 2-1 lead.

The Cougars stranded Dustin Robsinon at second in the fourth but came back with two in the fifth as Priest delivered a two-out go-ahead two run-double to left-centerfield for a 3-2 lead.

FSU retook the lead in the seventh after a pair of hits, a run-scoring balk call and an RBI-single for a 4-3 Bulldog lead.

In the eighth, WSU evened things after Hartman and Robinson delivered singles to put runners on the corners with one out before Ryan Skjonsby tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Fresno State used a two-out single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a two-out single to right field for the 5-4 lead.
