Late Inning Rallies Held Off By Nevada

PULLMAN, Wash. (March 28, 2026) – Washington State built an early three-run lead but Nevada used a big third inning and held off a couple late-inning threats to beat the Cougars 5-4 at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday afternoon.

Washington State recorded 13 hits to Nevada's seven but stranded 10 runners as the Wolf Pack capitalized on a three-run third inning to take control. Five Cougars recorded two-hit games and eight players recorded at least one hit. Max Hartman had an RBI-triple and Mason Pirello added an RBI-double as WSU collected multiple scoring chances throughout the afternoon.

Cougar starter Griffin Smith held the Wolfpack offense to three earned runs on five hits over six innings. Nevada starter Mahiro Tomita worked six innings to earn the win while the Wolf Pack bullpen held off a late Cougar push.

Washington State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Pirello delivered an RBI double to right-centerfield before Hartman followed with an RBI triple down the right field line. Ollie Obenour later added an RBI groundout to cap the three-run frame.

Nevada answered in the second inning with a run before erupting for three runs on four hits in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead.

The Cougars threatened in multiple innings, recording hits in seven of the nine frames, but were unable to break through against the Nevada bullpen.
