Cougars Complete First Day of ITA Northwest Regionals

STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Melisa Ates and sophomore Savanna Ly-Nguyen each captured two singles victories to lead Washington State Tennis during Friday's first day of play at the 2019 ITA Northwest Regionals at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Ates had little trouble in her two matches, defeating San Jose State State's Klara Milojkovic, 6-4, 6-2, before posting a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gonzaga's Haruna Tsuruta. Ates will face No. 2 seed Julia Rosenqvist of California in Saturday's third round.
Ly-Nguyen also reached the third round following a 6-0, 6-2 win over Eastern Washington's Yasmin Mansouri, 6-0, 6-2, and a 7-6 (7), 6-2 win over Oregon's Lillian Mould. Ly-Nguyen next faces Gonzaga's Kate Ketels.
Freshman Pang Jittakoat won her first-round match with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Fresno State's Georgia Lawson, before falling to Stanford's Angelica Blake, the No. 9 seed, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Hikaru Sato crushed Oregon's Taryn Fujimori, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round before dropping a 6-2, 6-1 contest against No. 4-seed Emily Arbuthnott of Stanford.
In doubles play, Ates and Sato cruised to an 8-4 win over Eastern Washington's Stephanie Broussard and Louise Waite, while Saint Mary's duo of Danielle McIntyre and Maria Kozyreva defeated Jittakoat and Ly-Nguyen, 8-1.
Play continues Saturday at the ITA Northwest Regionals.
