June 10, 2026 | Tennis
PULLMAN, Wash. (June 9, 2026) – Washington State senior Eva Alvarez Sande and the Cougar Tennis Team each captured Intercollegiate Tennis Association year-end awards, the organization announced Tuesday. Alvarez Sande was named the 2026 Northwest Region Senior Player of the Year, while Cougar Tennis also received the Community Service Award.
Alvarez Sande capped her WSU Cougar career with the first ITA Regional award of her career, finishing the season with a 20-6 singles record, including a 15-1 mark in dual matches and 5-0 in West Coast Conference Play. She captured WCC Player of the Year honors and repeated as an All-WCC First-Team selection.
For her career, the native of Coruna, Galicia, Spain, finished with 84 career singles wins and 160 combined singles and doubles wins, which ranks her in the Top-10 in program history. Alvarez Sande is the second Cougar since 2022 to be named Conference Player of the Year, joining WSU All-American Michaela Bayerlova who won the honor in the Pac-12 Conference that season.
As a team, the Cougars received the Northwest Region Community Service Award for the sixth time in program history, the most recent coming in 2020. WSU Tennis was heavily involved in community events, hosting tennis clinics, participating in WSU Athletic Department community events, working with Special Olympics, volunteering at Jefferson Elementary School in Pullman, while also volunteering year-round at Circles of Caring, which provides adult daytime health care for vulnerable and aging adults in a safe environment that uses carefully designed programs to help maintain or improve participants' physical, social, and/or cognitive functional abilities.
The Cougars also added a team member in January when they signed JoLynn Garrett after partnering with Team IMPACT, a national non-profit organization, has developed a unique multiyear program that matches children facing serious illness and disability with college athletic teams across the country. Based on a clinical model, Team IMPACT guides a symbiotic relationship between teams and children focused on socialization, empowerment, and resilience.
