Cougars Advance to WCC Semifinal with 4-0 Victory over Santa Clara

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (April 24, 2026) – One week after posting a 4-2 road victory at Santa Clara, Washington State Tennis backed up that win, this time with a 4-0 victory over the Broncos in a quarterfinal match at the 2026 West Coast Conference Championship Thursday at the Green Valley Country Club.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 16-7 on the season and advance to face No. 2-seed San Diego in a semifinal match Friday. Santa Clara ends its season at 8-15.
In doubles play to start the match, the Cougars captured wins on Courts 2 and 3 to take the opening point. On Court 3, WSU's Yura Nakagawa and Zali Morris cruised to a 6-1 win over Lizanne Boyer and Juliette Krumholz in just 18 minutes. At No. 2, the Cougar duo of Eva Alvarez Sande and Ava-Monet Sycamore clinched the point with a 6-2 win over Danielle Dimitrova and Anna Rahman. The match on Court 1 was stopped with WSU's Maxine Murphy and Chisato Kanemaki on serve against Ashley Katz and Tian Yu Dong, 3-4.
In singles action, Murphy quickly pushed the Cougar lead to 2-0 after completing a 6-4, 6-1 win over Boyer at No. 2. Kanemaki posted a straight-set win over Dong at No. 5, winning 6-4, 6-2, setting the stage for Puvill, who sealed the team victory with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Rahman at No. 3.
The three remaining matches were stopped with the team outcome decided. At No. 1, Alvarez Sande, ranked No. 95 nationally, was leading Dimitrova 6-3, 5-3, Nakagawa dropped a first set tiebreaker and was early in the second, down 6-7, (4), 1-1 at No. 4. At No. 6, Sycamore was early in the second against Krumholz, leading 7-6 (4), 1-1.
WSU will face San Diego Friday at 6 p.m. in their semifinal match.
