Cougars Extend Winning Streak to Eight Following 4-2, win at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (April 16, 2026) – After dropping the opening doubles point, Washington State Tennis captured four singles matches to defeat Santa Clara, 4-2, Thursday at the Degheri Tennis Center. With the win, the Cougars extend their winning streak to eight matches and improve to 15-6 on the season, 7-1 in West Coast Conference play. Santa Clara falls to 7-14, 3-5.
In doubles pay, Santa Clara captured wins at No. 1 and 3 to take the opening point. At No. 3, The Broncos' Lisanne Boyer and Juliette Krumholz defeated WSU's Yura Nakagawa and Martina Puvill, 6-3, followed by SCU's Tian Yu Dong and Ashley Katz' 6-3 win over Maxine Murphy and Chisato Kanemaki to seal the opening point. At No. 2, WSU's Eva Alvarez Sande and Ava-Monet Sycamore were leading Daniella Dimitrova and Anna Rahman, 5-2, when play was stopped.
Kanemaki quickly tied the match at 1-1 in singles as she posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dong at No. 5. WSU took a 2-1 lead when Puvill completed a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3.
At No. 2, Murphy, No. 120 in the most recent ITA rankings, dropped the first set against Boyer before storming back to win the second and take a 5-2 lead in the third. Boyer made a charge of her own, tying it a 5-5 and eventually forcing a tiebreaker. There, it was all Murphy as she pulled away for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), pushing the Cougs to within one win of the team victory. It was Murphy's eight consecutive victory and improved her dual match record to 14-3.
Santa Clara cut WSU's lead to 4-2 when Katz outlasted Nakagawa at No. 4, winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. The clinching match came at No. 1, where Alvarez Sande, ranked No. 90, won the first in a tiebreaker, before dropping the second to Dimitrova. The third set, however, was all Alvarez Sande as she dominated in a 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-0 win, giving WSU the 4-2 victory. It marked Alvarez Sande's sixth win in a row and improved her season dual match record to 15-1.
The No. 6 singles match between WSU's Ava-Monet Sycamore and Santa Clara's Juliette Krumholz was stopped late in the third set at 5-5, after Sycamore captured the first set 6-3, and Krumholz the second at 6-1.
WSU is next in action Saturday when it faces No. 40 San Diego in San Diego. Match time is set for Noon.
