Cougars Cap Senior Day with 4-0 Victory over Portland

PULLMAN, Wash. (April 12, 2026) – Washington State Tennis ran its winning streak to seven matches following a 4-0 victory over Portland Sunday at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. The win followed a pre-match, Senior Day ceremony highlighting the accomplishments of seniors Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy, who were playing their final home matches as Cougars.
With the team victory, WSU improves to 13-6 on the season, 6-1 in West Coast Conference play. Portland falls to 9-9, 4-4.
In doubles play, Portland jumped out early, with Meagan Pearson and Kylie Canubida taking a 6-3 win over Yura Nakagawa and Martina Puvill at No. 3. WSU found the equalizer at No. 1 when Maxine Murphy and Chisato Kanemaki completed a 6-3 win over Alaia Rubio Perez and Maria Galatescu, pushing the deciding point to No. w. There, WSU's Eva Alvarez Sande and Ava-Monet Sycamore dominated the tiebreaker in winning 7-6 (7-2), giving the Cougars the opening point.
In singles action, Portland defaulted at No. 6 before taking the court, pushing the WSU lead to 2-0. Alvarez, ranked No. 84 nationally, and made it 3-0 as she cruised past Rubio Perez, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1. Puvill then closed out the win as she posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Galatescu.
With the team outcome decided, the remaining three matches were abandoned. At No. 2, Murphy, ranked No. 106, was leading Martinez 6-3, 2-3, while Nakagawa was up a set and on serve against Pearson, 6-4, 1-2 at No. 4. The match at No. 5 between Kanemaki and Canubida had not started.
The Cougars are next in action Thursday at Santa Clara.
