FAIRFILED, Calif. (April 24, 2026) – Washington State Tennis saw its run at the 2026 West Coast Conference Championship come to end in a 4-2 loss at No. 51 San Diego Friday at the Green Valley Country Club.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 16-7 on the season while San Diego improved to 13-9.
Doubles began with the Toreros capturing wins on Courts 2 and 3 to capture the opening point. At No. 2, USD's Vilma Krebs Hyllested and Maria Shmakova posted a 6-3 win over Eva Alvarez Sande and Ava-Monet Sycamore while Kristina Nordikyan and Charlotte Keitel clinched the doubles point at No. 3 with a 7-5 win over Zali Morris and Yura Nakagawa. WSU's Maxine Murphy and Chisato Kanemaki were trailing 4-5 to Anna Linn Moll and Hannah Read at No. 1 when their match was abandoned.
In singles play, Read pushed San Diego's lead to 2-0 after a 6-0, 6-2 win against WSU's Martina Puvill on Court 3. Moll added to the lead following a 6-1, 6-4 win over Sycamore at No. 6, putting San Deigo within one match of victory. Murphy put the Cougars on the board with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Hyllested at No. 2 while Nakagawa picked up a 3-6,6-2,6-4 win over Ines Leon at No. 4, cutting the team score to 3-2.
Shmakova found the clinching win as she defeated Kanemaki, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 to give San Diego the 4-2 victory. The match on Court 1 was stopped with Alvarez Sande and Keitel even at 3-6, 7-6 (4), 4-4.
