Giguère and Macleod Homer Twice, WSU Splits Doubleheader at Texas State
March 06, 2026 | Baseball
Cougar freshman catcher Alexandre Giguère homered twice in the 9-7 game one win before Texas State broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run sixth inning to take game two, 10-4. Catcher Cam Macleod hit two homers for Washington State in game two.
In the game one win, Giguère homered twice as seven Cougars recorded hits to come back from trailing 5-1 in the fourth and 6-5 entering the seventh inning. WSU took the lead with three runs in the seventh while WSU pitching combined for a season-high 13 strikeouts. Starter Nick Lewis worked six innings and struck out a season-high seven, one off his career high. Reliever Kaden Wickersham earned the win and Scott Rienguette recorded the final eight outs to earn his second save of the season.
In game two, catcher Cam Macleod's solo homer, the first of his career, tied the game 1-1 in the fifth inning and he later hit a two-run shot in the ninth. Cougar starter Griffin Smith was impressive, allowing just one run on three hits over the first five innings before Texas State took the lead in the sixth inning and pulled away late.
KEY MOMENTS OF GAME 1
Texas State scored twice in the first and built a 5-1 lead with a three-run third inning. The Cougars answered back with a four-run fourth inning as Skjonsby doubled home Mason Pirello and Giguère followed one batter later with a line drive three-run home run to left-centerfield to tie the game at five.
The Bobcats re-took the lead with an RBI-groundout in their half of the fourth before starter Nick Lewis settled in with scoreless fifth and sixth innings. WSU took the lead with three runs in the seventh as Smith scored on a wild pitch, Kyler Northrop doubled and later scored on Dustin Robinson's RBI-groundout to second base and Hartman scored on a wild pitch for a 9-6 WSU advantage.
Relievers Ryan Falke and Kaden Wickersham combined for a scoreless sixth before Wickersham gave way to Scott Rienguette with two runners on and one out in the seventh. Rienguette struck out the only to hitters he faced to end the threat before Giguère led off the eighth with a no-doubt solo shot down the left field line to push the lead to 9-6.
TSU pushed a run across and put two runners on in the eighth but Rienguette ended the frame with a strikeout, preserving a 9-7 Cougar lead.
Rienguette worked around a two-out single in the ninth to close out the 9-7 win and his second save of the season.
