Cougars Complete 5-2 Win Over Portland State

PULLMAN, Wash. (Feb. 20,, 2026) – After dropping the opening doubles point, Washington State captured five of six singles matched en route to a 5-2 win over Portland State Friday at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. With the win, the Cougars improve to 4-3 on the season and 14-0 all-time against Portland State. The Vikings fall to 3-2.
Portland State captured the opening point by taking two out of three doubles matches. It was WSU which jumped out quick as Yura Nakagawa and Zali Morris posted a 6-1 win over Scarlett Perkins and Angola Ige at No. 3. PSU got the equalizer at No. 2 when Nene Uemura and Kasumi Hirayama led wire-to-wire in a 6-2 over Eva Alvarez Sande and Martina Puvill. The deciding match came down to Court 1, where WSU's Maxine Murphy and Chisato Kanemaki had raced to a 4-1 lead over Hana Abdelhamid and Marta Giglio. The Viking pair captured four-straight games to a take a 5-4 lead. The match went to a tiebreaker where the PSU duo came away with a 7-6 (7-2) win to secure the opening point.
In singles play, WSU quickly regained the lead as Alvarez Sande had no trouble in posting a 6-1, 6-0 win over Perkins at No. 1. Puvill followed quickly behind with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hirayama at No. 4 to give the Cougars a 2-1 advantage.
The Vikings evened it at 2-2 when Giglio completed a hard-fought, 6-4, 6-4 win over Nakagawa at No. 3. At No. 2, Murphy needed three sets en route to a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 win over Uemura, pushing the Cougars to within one win of the team victory. That came once Morris finished a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ige at No. 6, giving WSU a 4-2 advantage with one match remaining. It was the first time since the opening match against Idaho on Jan. 18 that Morris had played while recovering from injury. At No. 5, Kanemaki defeated Abdelhamid 6-4, 6-2, for the final margin of victory.
Washington State returns to the court Sunday when they host a doubleheader against Montana and Montana State. The Monday match begins at 10 a.m.. from Hollingbery Fieldhouse with Montana State to follow at 2 p.m.
