Cougars Fall at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Feb. 7, 2025) – Washington State Tennis dropped a 7-0 decision to Cal Poly Friday afternoon at the Ronca Tennis Center. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 6-2 on the season.

In doubles action, the Mustangs captured the opening point by taking wins on Courts 1 and 3. At No. 1, Cal Poly's due of Kenedy Buntrock and Romane Mosse had little trouble with Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy, 6-2. At No. 2, WSU's Elyse Tse and Chisato Kanemaki evened things up with a 6-4 win over Jessica MacCallum and Peyton Dunkle, pushing the deciding match to Court 3. In a match that went to a tiebreak, the Mustang pair of Sarah MacCallum and Amy Leather escaped with a 7-6 (2) win over Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov, giving Cal Poly the 1-0 leading heading into singles.

In singles play, the Cougars did not have answers for the Mustangs attack. Cal Poly swept all six matches, four in straight sets, en route to the victory. At No. 5 Jessica MacCallum was off first with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Martina Puvill at No. 5. Moose posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Abouelsaad at No. 4 to push the lead to 3-0 before Alexandra Ozerets completed a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Tse to clinch the team win.

At No. 1, Buntrock needed three sets to defeat Alvarez Sande, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 while Dunkle played two tight sets as she defeated Murphy, 6-4, 7-6 (2). In the final match, Cal Poly's Natalie Lynch defeated Markov 6-4, 7-6 (1) at No. 6.

WSU Concludes its two-match swing through Central California Saturday when they face Fresno State at 10 a.m. in San Luis Obispo.
