Cougars Fall in Series-Opener at No. 20 Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. (May 16, 2024) – Washington State dropped the series-opener 9-2 at No. 20 Oregon at PK Park Thursday evening.

The Cougars (21-30, 9-19 Pac-12) received a double and team-leading tenth home run of the season from Joey Kramer while Casen Taggart added a pair of singles. WSU starting pitcher Grant Taylor struck out seven in five innings of work to push his season total to 99, the seventh-most in program single-season history and most since 2009. Taylor also pushed his career strikeout total to 252, passing Joe McIntosh (1971-73) for the third-most strikeouts in Washington State history.

Oregon (35-16, 17-11 Pac-12) built a 6-1 lead with runs in each of the first three innings before adding three in the sixth to seal up the series-opener.

Oregon jumped out to an early lead with a two-run home run in the first inning before Morrow bounced a single passed a diving Duck third baseman to drive in a run in the second inning. Oregon used a three-run home run in the second inning and added a run in the third inning.

Kramer gave the Cougars a couple big swings throughout evening and lined a one-out homer down the left field line in the sixth inning. WSU threatened in a couple innings but left a pair of runners on in the second and fourth innings.
