Cougars Fall at No. 32 San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Washington State's upset bid against No. 32 San Diego came up just short at the Toreros held on to defeat No. 43 Washington State, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.

With the loss the Cougars fall to 8-3 on the season while USD improves to 6-3.

San Diego captured the opened doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3. Solymar Colling and Helena Francati clinched the opening point as they defeated Michaela Bayerlova and Hikaru Sato, 6-4 at No. 1. The Torero duo of Elizabeth Goldsmith and Kati Kukaras defeated Pang Jittakoat and Jovana Knezevic 6-2 at No. 3 to open the scoring. At No. 2, WSU's Yang Lee and Melisa Ates has little trouble with Maria Tyrina and Gemma Garcia, winning 6-2.

In singles play, the Cougars made it close as Jittakoat, Lee and No. 63 Bayerlova all posted straight-set wins at No. 4,6, and 1, respectively. The match came down to No. 2 singles where Sato and Goldsmith, ranked No. 124 nationally, were locked in a three-set battle. After Sato captured the first set 6-4, Goldsmith responded in convincing fashion, winning the final two sets 6-1, 6-0 to seal the team victory.

The Cougars conclude their Southern California road swing Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. when they face UC Santa Barbara in San Diego.
