Cougars place 12th at the Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz – Senior Daniel Kolar and freshman Tianyu Wu each posted a top-50 finish at the 40th Arizona Intercollegiate, as the Washington State men's golf team concluded its first tournament of the 2020 spring season on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Kolar ended play in a tie for 41st in the 84-player field by shooting +6 at 219 (71,70, 78) on the 71-par course at the Sewailo Golf Club. Wu opened his first spring with the Cougars with a +8 at 221 (73, 75, 73) to finish in a tie for 49th. As a team, Washington State finished 12th in the 14-team field, shooting an 881 (+29).

"I am proud of the way our guys competed this week" said coach Dustin White. "They played a lot of solid golf – made some birdies and showed grit after a tough stretch. Our second round just got away from us and made it a tough finish. There are a lot of positives to take away and we look forward to improving each week as the spring plays out."

The senior began his day by putting the finishing touches on a second round that had resumed after play was stop on Monday due to darkness. Kolar answered the call by finishing with his best round of the tournament by shooting one-under-par at 70, before finishing the third round in 78 strokes to end the Arizona Intercollegiate in a tie for 41st.

Two strokes behind Kolar on the player leaderboard was the freshman Wu, who finished his second round at four-over-par after play resumed. He then turned in four birdies en route to a two-over-par finish in the tournament's final round to end play in a tie for 49th.

Fellow freshman Yuya Eguchi carded a team-best one-over-par (72) in the third round. Eguchi started his tournament on fire, shooting an even par in his first round. After an uninspiring second round, he rallied and lit up the front nine during the third round, firing three birdies, to end the tournament tied for 76th.

Freshman Chistian Yanagi started strong in his third round, converting four birdies on the front nine. Yanagi finished the round with a three-over-par (74) to place him in a tie for 61st. Only trailing Yanagi by one stroke was senior Nicklaus Chiam, who carded a +13 (226) to finish in a tie for 66th in his first tournament of 2020.

The Cougars are back in action February 21, as they open a three-day tournament in Lihue, Hawaii at the John Burns Intercollegiate on the Wailua Golf Course
