Cougars Finish Strong at Hawaii Invitational

HONOLULU – The Washington State Women's Tennis team concluded its 2020 opening weekend by capturing five singles and three doubles matches at the 2020 Weinman Foundation Hawaii Invitational Saturday at the UH Tennis Courts.

After rained washed out Friday's play, the Cougars opened Saturday with doubles, winning three matches. Michael Bayerlova and Yang Lee had no trouble defeated Northern Arizona's Chiara Tomasetti and Ellie Millard, 6-1. Melisa Ates and Hikaru Sato cruised by Louisville's Andrea Di Palma and Maia Haumuller, 6-2 while Savanna Ly-Nguyen and Carla Quadflieg needed a tiebreaker to defeat Louisville's Jelena Vujanic and Nikolina Jovic, 7-6 (1). WSU's Jovana Knezevic and Pang Jittakoat dropped a 6-1 decision to Louisville's Dina Chaika ad Rhea Verma.

In singles play, Bayerlova needed three sets before defeated No. 57 Chiara Tomasetti, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Sato and Lee also posted singles wins, with Sato defeating NAU's Adrianna Sosnowska, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, while Lee cruised past Hawaii's Lee Romain, 6-0, 6-2. Quadflieg survived a three-setter that started Thursday before darkness came and concluded with a 4-6,6-4, 7-5 win. WSU's Maddie Egan concluded her match from Thursday with a 3-6, 5-2, 1-0 (10-2) win over BYU's Morgan Hall. Egan later dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to NAU's Mimi Bland.

Ates, ranked No. 103, dropped a 6-1, 6-3 match to Hawaii's Petra Melounova, then was leading 5-4 against Hawaii's Rebecca Ehn when rain ended the day. Jittakoat lost a nail-biter against BYU's Leah Heimuli, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8). Hawaii's Bojana Markovic, ranked No. 91, defeated Ly-Nguyen, 6-4, 6-3, while Knezevic fell in both of her Saturday matches, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to NAU's Madison Moore and 6-0, 6-2 to Hawaii's Maddie Kim.

The Cougars open their dual-match season Saturday with a pair of matches in Pullman. They face Idaho at Noon and Seattle at 5 p.m., with both matches being played at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
