WSU Cruises Past BYU 6-1

PULLMAN, Wash. – The 15th-ranked Washington State Cougars improved to 9-1 on the season following a convincing 6-1 victory over BYU Friday afternoon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
The day began with doubles as WSU (9-1) jumped out quick when the No. 1 duo of Tiffany Mylonas and Hikaru Sato cruised to a 6-2 win over Kate Cusick and Anastasia Abramyan. It was much closer at No. 2 and 3 as both sets were at 5-5 at one point. WSU pulled it out at No. 3 as Michaela Bayerlova and Aneta Miksovska rallied from 4-5 down to post a 7-5 win over BYU's (3-2) Samantha Smith and Taylah Beckman. The match at No. 2 between WSU's Melisa Ates and Yang Lee and BYU's Polina Malykh and Madeline Almeida was stopped at 6-6 once the doubles point was clinched.
In singles play, Bayerlova, ranked No. 36 nationally, quickly made it a 2-0 lead as she defeated Cusick 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1. With the win Bayerlova improves to 11-2 on the season and 7-0 in dual matches. Sato made it 3-0 as she posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Abramyan at No. 2.
Freshman Savanna Ly-Nguyen clinched the win for WSU as she rallied for a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Almeida.
BYU got on the board at No. 3 singles when Malykh rallied from a set down to defeat Mylonas, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2). It proved to be the only win on the day for BYU.
Ates cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Smith at No. 5 while Miksovska closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Beckman at No. 6.
Washington State continues its Friday doubleheader by hosting Seattle University at 5 p.m.
