Ates, Lee Reach A Flight Singles Final at Redbird Invite

NORMAL, Ill. – Senior Melisa Ates and sophomore Yang Lee will meet in Sunday's A Flight Singles final after both registered two victories to highlight play Saturday at the 2019 Redbird Invite at the Bloomington Tennis Center.

The day opened with doubles play as Ates and freshman Carla Quadflieg posted a 6-1 victory over Illinois State's Natalia Bravo and Laura Fitzgerald. The WSU duo of Lee and freshman Maddie Egan fell in their quarterfinal match, losing 6-2 to Illinois State's Ivon Mihaleva and Elena Janulovska.

In singles action, Ates had little trouble in her two matches. She opened with a 6-2, 6-3 win over IUPUI's Krystal Grubb, 6-2, 6-3, then followed that with a semifinal victory over Northern Illinois' Maria Potsi, 6-3, 6-2. Ates will meet teammate Lee in the final after Lee opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Northern Illinois' Paula Veyhle, then reached the final with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Illinois State's Tara Damnjanovic.

In Flight 2 single splay, Quadflieg defeated IUPUI's Sarah Lounsberry, 6-3, 6-4, then fell in her semifinal match to Illinois State's Laura Fitzgerald, 6-3, 6-3.

In Flight 3, Egan cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 opening-round win over Northern Illinois' Lara Slisko then fell in the semifinals to Slisko's teammate, Elena Jankulovska, 7-5, 6-4.

Play concludes at the 2019 Redbird Invite Sunday.
