Ly-Nguyen, Knezevic Impress at Rainbow Wahine Invitational

HONOLULU – Freshman Savanna Ly-Nguyen and junior Jovana Knezevic captured a pair of victories to highlight the second day of play at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational Friday, hosted by the University of Hawaii at the UH Tennis Courts.

For the second-straight day, the Cougars captured all but one singles match against Hawaii in the non-team scoring event, while going 1-3 in doubles.

Ly-Nguyen, who signed her National Letter of Intent last month and enrolled at WSU prior to this semester, posted a three-set victory over Maayan Sela, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. The Cougar newcomer saved two match points trailing 5-4 in the third set before winning the final three games to clinch the match. She then teamed with Knezevic for a 6-4 doubles win over Roxanne Resma and Sophia Storch.

In her Cougar debut, junior Knezevic was also a double winner, teaming with Ly-Nguyen in doubles then posted a 6-2, 7-5 singles win over Storch.

Freshman Yang Lee had the biggest win over the day over Petra Melounova, ranked No. 51 in the ITA preseason ranking. Lee rallied from a set down, dominating the third set to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-0. Lee and Michaela Bayerlova dropped a 6-3 doubles match to Storch and Resma. Bayerlova made it two-for-two in singles matches week, winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 over Nikola Dolakova.

Senior Tiffany Mylonas was up early against Resma before the Hawaii player retired trailing 4-3 in the first set. Mylonas and Aneta Miksovska dropped a tight, 7-5, doubles decision to Sela and Dolakova. Freshman Hikaru Sato bounced back from a loss Thursday to defeat Michelle Pits, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 Friday. Sato and Melisa Ates fell to Alzbeta Houbova, 6-4.

Ates came out strong against Houbova in singles winning the first set, 6-0, but could not keep the momentum as she dropped the next two sets to fall 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.
