WSU Opens Season Hosting Cougar Classic

THIS WEEK: The Cougars begin their fall season by hosting the 2016 Cougar Classic at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts, Sept. 9-11. Play begins each day at 10 a.m. The Cougars will have six players competing in the tournament: senior Victoria Matejevic, sophomores Aneta Miksovska and Barbora Michalkova and freshmen Ege Tomey, Melisa Ates and Lejla Colic.

COUGAR CLASSIC FORMAT: The 2016 Cougar Classic will consist of two, 16 player singles draws with play-in matches and a 16-team doubles draw with play-in matches. There will also be a consolation bracket guaranteeing each player multiple matches over the weekend.

COUGAR CLASSIC FIELD: Joining Washington State in the Cougar Classic Field will be Montana, Montana State, Lewis–Clark State College and Boise State.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2016-17 season the Cougars will have three new faces to go with three returners. The returning roster includes senior Victoria Matejevic, and sophomores Aneta Miksovska and Barbora Michalkova. New to the squad this season are freshmen Ege Tomey, Melisa Ates and Lejla Colic.

LAST SEASON IN REVIEW: Washington State finished off dual match play with a 17-9 overall record and 2-8 in conference play in 2016. The Cougars finished ninth in a competitive Pac-12 conference that had the top ten teams finishing with national rankings. WSU started the season nationally ranked at No. 57.and reached a high of No. 40 during the season.

COACH HART: Lisa Hart is in her 14th season as the head coach of Washington State. Hart has accumulated 171 wins over her tenure, registering a 17-9 record last season. In 2012 the Cougars went 19-7 as Hart was awarded the Pac-12 Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year award for the 2011-12 season.
