Cougars Head South for UNLV Fall Invitational

THIS WEEK: The Cougars continue their fall season as they compete in the 2016 UNLV Fall Invitational, Sept. 23-25, in Las Vegas, Nev. Play begins at 10 a.m. on Friday and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Cougars will have six players competing in the tournament: senior Victoria Matejevic, junior Barbora Michalkova, sophomore Aneta Miksovska, and freshmen Melisa Ates and Lejla Colic.

LAST TIME OUT: At the 2016 Cougar Classic, the Cougars captured both the singles and doubles finals.
Miksovska captured the Crimson Flight singles title defeating teammate Michalkova, 6-1, 6-3. Ates took home the Gray Flight singles crown defeating teammate Colic, 7-6 (3), 6-4. Michalkova and Miksovska paired up to defeat Boise State's Hanna Kantenwein and Milena Toseva to win the doubles title, 6-2. The Cougars placed two of their three doubles teams in the semifinals, while also having five of the six singles semifinalists.

UNLV INVITATIONAL DRAWS SET: The 2016 UNLV Invitational will consist of five singles flights and three doubles flights, along with play-in matches. The pair of Michalkova and Miksovska will play in the first flight of the doubles. Michalkova will start off the first flight of the singles round, Miksovska in the second flight and Matejevic in the third flight. Ates is set to play in the fourth flight of singles and Tomey will play in the fifth flight.

UNLV INVITATIONAL FIELD: Joining Washington State in the 2016 UNLV Fall Invitational field will be a number of teams which finished the 2016 nationally ranked, including USC (21), Baylor (32), Fresno State (43), UNLV (52), South Alabama (53), Long Beach State (62) and Northern Arizona. WSU finished the year with a ranking of No. 68.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2016-17 season the Cougars will have three new faces to go with three returners. The returning roster includes senior Victoria Matejevic, sophomores Barbora Michalkova and Aneta Miksovska, and freshmen Melisa Ates, Lejla Colic and Ege Tomey.

LAST SEASON IN REVIEW: Washington State finished off dual match play with a 17-9 overall record in 2016. The Cougars finished ninth in a competitive Pac-12 conference that had the top ten teams finishing with national rankings. WSU started the season nationally ranked at No.57 and reached a high of No.40 during the season. Departed from last year's squad is Maria Biryukova (30-15 singles record), Trang Huynh (30-15), Lize Leenknecht (19-12), Donika Bashota (36-8) and Holly Monahan (6-7).

COACH HART: Lisa Hart is in her 14th season as the head coach of Washington State. Hart has accumulated 171 wins over her tenure, registering a 17-9 record last season.
