WSU Doubles Teams Advance at ITA Northwest Regional Championships

STANFORD, Calif. – Washington State advanced two doubles teams to the third round at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, while singles competitors dominated the consolation matches Saturday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

In the second round of doubles play, the newly partnered Barbora Michalkova and Guzal Yusupova dominated over Cal Poly's Claire Bouqet and IIana Oleynik, posting an impressive 8-1 score. The duo takes on Caroline Lampl and Kimberly Yee of the No. 1-ranked Stanford in the third round of play on Sunday morning.

Senior Victoria Matejevic and freshman Melisa Ates partnered up and defeated Portland's Radina Dimitrova and Anna Oberg, 8-4, during the second round of doubles play. Matejevic and Ates are set to play Kareena Manji and Danielle McIntyre of St. Mary's Sunday morning in the doubles third round.

WSU's freshman duo of Lejla Colic and Ege Tomey fell to Portland's Tatiana Grigoryan and Emily Soares, 8-4 in the first round of the doubles consolation play.

In singles play, sophomore Aneta Miksovska was the final competitor to represent the Cougars in the third round. Miksovska was unable to maintain her momentum falling to San Jose State's Sybille Gauvain, 6-3, 6-4.

Three out of six WSU singles competitors posted victories during singles consolation play.

Newcomer Yusupova, who entered WSU with a WTA singles ranking of 978, defeated Emma Wilson of the No. 43-ranked Fresno State posting a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (4) victory. Tomey soundly defeated Caitlyn Frankel of Santa Clara, 6-3, 6-2, while Melisa Ates bested Sacramento State's Anna-Maria Nau, 6-1, 6-0.

The remaining consolation singles matches saw Cal Poly's Ilana Oleynik defeat Colic, 6-3, 6-0. WSU dropped a pair of matches to San Francisco players as Joselyn Treyes defeated Victoria Matejevic, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (8), and Emily Maxfield defeated Michalkova, 6-3, 6-4.
