Cougars Dominate in Win Over Eagles

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State tennis team remains undefeated after a 7-0 victory over Eastern Washington Saturday, at the Simmelink Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
In doubles, the Cougars struck first. The No. 2 duo of Donika Bashota and Victoria Matejevic had little trouble with Dani Young and Katrina Domingo, posting an easy 6-0 victory. Aneta Miksovska and Barbora Michalkova, the No. 3 pair, could not muster a win, falling 6-2 to Moira Hedberg and Erin Blessing. At No. 1, Maria Biryukova and Trang Huynh came up big for the Cougars, edging out Janaya Smith and Faye Worrall, 7-6 (1), to secure the doubles point.
In singles, No. 1 Biryukova swept Smith in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to secure the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Michalkova, at No. 3, quickly added to the Cougars lead as she out-dueled Young, posting a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win.
At No. 4, Huynh clinched the match for Washington State in dominating fashion besting Swindell, 6-3, 6-1, while Bashota kept the Cougar hot streak alive by knocking off Hedberg, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.
At No. 6, Matejevic had little trouble with Worrall posting a resounding 6-0, 6-1 victory. Miksovska at No. 5, followed suit by closing out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Blessing.
Washington State returns to the court Friday, Jan. 29, taking on Kansas State at 2 p.m. The Cougars are then slated to face North Texas on Sunday, Jan. 31, at noon. Both matches will be held at the Simmelink Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
