Cougars Defeat Wildcats 5-2

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State tennis team kept its winning streak alive by posting a 5-2 win against Kansas State, Friday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
Washington State once again captured the doubles point. The No. 2 duo of Maria Biryukova and Trang Huynh continued to ride their hot streak, defeating Carolina Costamagna and Millie Stretton, 6-4. At No. 1, Donika Bashota and Lize Leenknecht bested Ana Garcia Navas and Iva Bago, 6-4, clinching the point for WSU. Barbora Michalkova and Aneta Miksovska were up 5-3 over Sara Castellano and Maria Panaite, before play was stopped.
The Cougars continued their dominance, taking the second and third points. The second point for the Cougars came from Bashota at No. 2, as she rolled to a dominant 6-2, 6-2, victory over Costamagna. No. 1 Biryukova dropped the first set, but bounced back winning the next two sets, ultimately defeating Castellano in a tightly contested 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory, while at No. 3, Michalkova won her first set, but could not finish off the match and fell 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, to Navas.
Huynh clinched the match for the Cougars as she battled with Bago at No. 4, coming out on top 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, extending WSU's lead to an insurmountable 4-1.
At No. 5, Miksovska continued the Cougar onslaught, defeating Cimu in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. No. 5 Matejevic lost a close fought match, 6-3, 6-4, to Stretton, finishing out the match for the Cougars.
Washington State tennis looks to keep up its winning ways against North Texas on Sunday. The match is slated to begin at noon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
