WSU Finishes Strong at the Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's tennis team captured three singles championships on the final day of the Cougar Classic at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
"We are very pleased with the way that our players came out and competed today in the finals," head coach Lisa Hart said. "We accomplished our goals for the weekend and it was nice to see us play at a high level throughout the whole tournament."
At No. 2 singles, freshman Elisabeth Fournier grabbed the first singles championship for the Cougars with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 victory over Boise State's Rocio Frej.
Sophomore Ekaterina Kamendova defeated Boise State's Bianca Jochimsen, 7-5, 6-4 to win the No.1 singles championship and the second of the day for the Cougars.
Earning the third singles championship for the Cougars was Marina Nicolas who battle against teammate Jessica Gomez. Nicolas posted a 7-5, 6-3, over Gomez capturing the singles championship at No. 3 singles.
Sophomore Livia Gherman fell in a hard fought finals match at the No. 4 singles position to Gonzaga's Monica Price, 7-6, 6-3.
In consolation play, Aleksandra Cekic picked up a victory over Portland's Stefanie Doolittle, 4-6, 6-1, 10-3, while Ioana Oprea fell in three sets to Boise State's Jana Mackova, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6.
Teammates Aleksandra Cekic and Elisabeth Fournier fell in the No. 2 doubles championships, 8-4, to Boise State's Jana Mackova and Rocio Frej.
The Cougars return to action in two weeks when they travel to Boise for the Boise State Invitational, beginning on October 3, 2008.
