Monty Mathews

Monty Mathews begins his first season as the Cougars’ strength and conditioning coach for the baseball, men’s golf and women’s swimming programs.

Mathews joined WSU after spending the previous four years as the head strength and conditioning coach at The New School in Fayetteville, Ark. In addition to his strength and condition responsibilities, Mathews also worked as an assistant track and field coach all four years, served as an assistant athletic director the last three years and added the title Dean of Student Life his final year. Mathews also served as the Arkansas State Director of High School strength and Conditioning through the National High School Strength Coaches Association from 2017-19.

Prior to The New School, Mathews spent three years at the University of Arkansas where he worked with the Razorback men’s golf and women’s swimming programs as the head strength and conditioning coach. Mathews also assisted with workouts and speed work for baseball, women’s soccer, gymnastics, men’s and women’s track and field, women’s basketball and softball programs at Arkansas. Mathews also worked at Action Sports Medicine in Texas and with the strength and conditioning programs at Abilene Christian University and Boston College.

Mathews earned his bachelor’s degree in sports fitness and leisure studies with a minor in business administration at Hardin Simmons University in 2012 and a master’s degree in kinesiology at Arkansas in 2016. Mathews owns certifications in CSCS, USA-W Level 1, Speed and Agility, Program Design Specialist, RPR – Level 1, CPR, AED and First Aid, and is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and USA Weightlifting.
