February 27, 2026 | Tennis
SEATTLE, Wash. (Feb. 27, 2026) – The No. 12-ranked Washington women's tennis team posted a 7-0 victory over Washington State Friday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The loss snaps WSU's three-match winning streak and moves the Cougars to 6-4 on the season. Washington improves to 8-0.
In doubles action it was all Washington as the Huskies captured all three matches by identical 6-1 scores.
Singles followed and Washington proved to be too much, taking five of the six matches in straight sets. At No. 3, UW's Alexia Jacobs cruised past Martina Puvill, 6-0, 6-01, while Husky Jermine Sherif, ranked No. 124 nationally, defeated Yura Nakagawa 6-1, 6-3, pushing the score to 3-0. The clinching point came at No. 5, where No. 90 Marie Weissheim completed a 6-0, 6-4 win over Chisato Kanemaki, give UW a 4-0 lead with three matches remaining. At No. 6, Washington's Carina Syrtveit defeated Ava-Monet Sycamore.
The Cougars battled at the top two spots at WSU's Maxine Murphy captured the first set on Court 2 against No. 65 Reece Carter. But Carter was too much after that in finishing a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory. At No. 1, WSU's Eva Alvarez Sande was locked in a battle with Washington's Erika Matsuda, ranked No. 72. In a first set that lasted nearly 90 minutes, Matsuda came away with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker. The second proved to be much the same as the two went to another tiebreaker. Alvarez Sande had four set points but could not close it out as Matsuda rallied to win the breaker, 9-7, completing the 7-6, 7-6 victory.
The Cougars return to the court Saturday, Feb. 28, in Seattle when they face No. 31 UC Santa Barbara.
