February 26, 2026 | Baseball
LONG BEACH, Calif. (February 26, 2026) – Washington State allowed a go-ahead three-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning of a 6-4 defeat to BYU at Blair Field in Long Beach Thursday afternoon.
Â
WSU took a 4-3 lead into the ninth and retired the first two hitters before a hit-by-pitch and walk put two runners on for a BYU pinch-hitter who hit a 2-0 pitch out to left field for the lead. WSU brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning but a flyout to left ended the Washington State rally.
Â
WSU received seven dominant outings from starter Luke Meyers who struck three and allowed just one unearned run on four hits. Meyers was perfect until BYU led off the sixth with a bunt single to third base.
Â
Trevor Smith and Gavin Roy each collected three hits while Dustin Robinson had a pair of doubles and two RBI.
Â
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
WSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as Northrop and Hartman each worked walks to start the inning before Robinson pulled a two-run double just inside the first base bag and down the right field line to score both. Washington State pushed the lead to 4-0 two runs in the fifth after Kyler Northrop's RBI-sacrifice fly to left field and Max Hartman pulled an RBI-triple into the right field corner.
Â
BYU broke up Meyer's perfect game with a leadoff bunt single in the sixth inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly after a WSU throwing error.
Â
Meyers ran into some trouble in the seventh but used a double play and a groundout to second to strand a pair of runners in the frame.
Â
BYU made it a one-run game after scoring a pair of runs on three hits and a hit-by-pitch in the eighth inning. In the ninth, BYU used a hit-by-pitch and walk to runners on first and second with two outs before a pinch-hitter hit a go-ahead three-run home run to left field,
