Cougars Open Season with 6-1 Win at Idaho

MOSCOW, Idaho (Jan. 18, 2026) – Washington State Women's Tennis opened its 2026 spring season in convincing fashion, posting a 6-1 victory over Idaho Sunday at the Kibbie Dome. The win marked the 28th-straight over Idaho in the series and the first for first-year Head Coach Josh Graetz as a Cougar.
WSU captured the opening doubles point by sweeping all three doubles matches. WSU's No. 3 pair of Martina Puvill and Ava-Monet Sycamore were first off with a 6-4 win over Hanna Koprowska and Ida Johansson. At No. 1, WSU's Maxine Murphy and Chisato Kanemaki clinched the team point on their fourth match point, defeating Jessica Matthews and Naomi Schraeder 6-3. At No. 2, The Cougar duo of Eva Alvarez Sande and Yura Nakagawa came away with a 7-5 win over Valentina Rodas and Chenyue Xu to seal the sweep.
In singles action, Murphy and Alvarez Sande each posted quick straight-set victories. At No. 1, Murphy had little trouble with Matthews, winning 6-1, 6-3, while Alvarez Sande defeated Schraeder 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2.
Nakagawa clinched the team victory for WSU with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Koprowska at No. 3. At NO. 4, Puvill rallied from a set down to defeat Xu, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Idaho picked up its lone win at No. 6 when Johansson defeated Morris, 6-2, 6-0. Kanemaki closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Rodas at No. 5.
The Cougars are next in action Jan. 24-25 when they travel to Athens, Ga. to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. WSU will face San Diego State Saturday and then either No. 1 Georgia or Maryland on Sunday.
