Cougars Open WCC Play With Sweep of Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. (March 22, 2025) – Washington State Tennis captured the opening doubles point then won three singles matches to complete a 4-0 sweep over Gonzaga to open West Coast Conference play Saturday at the Stevens Center. With the win, WSU improves to 11-5 on the season while Gonzaga falls to 7-7.

The day began with doubles and the opening point was contested to the very end. Gonzaga's No.1 duo of Emily Robertson and Ella Nielsen defeated the nation's 41st-ranked team of Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy, 6-4, at No. 1. After WSU's Elyse Tse and Chisato Kanemaki defeated Rose Hayes and Lia Espinal, 7-5, at No. 2, the deciding match came down to No. 3. There, WSU's Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov fought off three match points before prevailing over Norhan Hesham and Safien Boulonois at No.3 , 7-6, to capture the opening doubles point.

In singles play, WSU captured three singles matches in straight sets to secure the team win. At No. 6, Martina Puvill defeated Espinil, 6-3, 6-1, while Murphy had little trouble with Hesman at No. 2, winning 6-3, 6-3. The clinching match came at No. 3, where Tse completed a 6-3, 6-2 win, giving WSU a 4-0 lead.

The remaining three matches were stopped with WSU ahead in each. Alvarez Sande was leading Robertson, 7-5, 4-1 at No. 1, Abouelsaad was ahead of Hayes, 6-3, 5-1, at No. 4 and Kanemaki was leading Boulonois at No. 5, 6-4, 4-5,
