Cougars Open Season with 7-0 Sweep of Eastern Washington

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State Tennis began its 2024 dual season in convincing fashion as it defeated Eastern Washington 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
The day began with doubles as the Cougars captured two of three matches to earn the opening point. At No. 1, WSU's Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse captured the final four games en route to a 6-2 win over Scout Mathews and Isabella Foshee. The Eagles evened it at 1-1 as Jennifer Kida and Anait Arutiunian posted a 6-2 win over Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom at No. 2, setting the stage for Court 3. There, WSU's Hannia Abouelsaad and Martina Markov completed a 6-3 victory over Sara Vasic and Kenzington Mann to give WSU the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
In singles play, Tse extended the Cougar lead as she completed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nizetic at No. 4. At No. 3, Kumhom picked up her team-leading 11th win of the season with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Foshee. Alvarez Sande then clinched the team victory as she completed a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over Kida at No. 1, giving WSU a 4-0 lead with three matches remaining.
Nakagawa survived a three-set battled as she prevailed with a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (1) win over Mathews at No. 2 while Abouelsaad had little trouble in a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mann at No. 5. The final match of the day saw Markov complete a 6-2, 6-1 win over Vasic, giving the freshman her first dual-match victory as a Cougar.
WSU is next in action Sunday when it hosts Idaho at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. Match time is set for 11:30 a.m.
