PULLMAN, Wash. (April 3, 2023) – Five Washington State pitchers combined for a two-hitter and retired the final 22 batters in a 6-1 victory over BYU at Bailey-Brayton Field Monday afternoon.

Washington State improved to 18-9 overall with their fourth straight win after scoring twice in the first and three times in the second inning. The Cougars matched a season-high with six doubles as Sam Brown and Jonah Advincula each collected three hits including two doubles a piece while Bryce Matthews added two hits.

WSU starting pitcher Spencer Jones allowed a two-out RBI-double in the second inning but ended the frame with a groundout that started the steak of retiring 22-consecutive Brigham Young batters to end the game.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the first inning, Jacob McKeon worked a two-out walk, Brown followed with an RBI-double to right-centerfield and Advincula pulled his own RBI-double down the right field line for a 2-0 lead. BYU answered with their own RBI-double to right field to cut the Cougar lead to 2-1.

WSU added three more runs in the second on a BYU miscue as a run scored on a wild pitch that came on a strikeout, another run scored on an RBI-groundout from Kyle Russell and McKeon lined an RBI-double to right-centerfield for a 5-1 lead.

The Cougar pitching staff received two scoreless innings from McKabe Cottrell who struck out three while working the third and fourth innings and Connor Wilford retired all six batters he faced in the fifth and sixth innings. Shane Spencer followed by striking out all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings before Andrew Baughn worked a perfect ninth.
