Cougars Have Strong First Day at ITA Northwest Regionals

STANFORD, Calif. – Washington State University won eight of 10 matches to highlight the first day of play at the 2023 ITA Northwest Regionals Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Center.

WSU began the day by sweeping its three doubles matches with No. 4-seeded Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse coming away with an 8-7 win over UC Davis' Daisy Maunupau and Olive Maunupau. Other WSU victories included Hania Abouelsaad and Martin Markov's 8-4 win over Arianna Stavropoulos from UC Davis while Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom posted an 8-2 win over Portland State's Momoko Yoshimura and Nika Beukers.

In singles play, the Cougars won five of seven matches as Alvarez Sande, seeded No. 6, had little trouble with Santa Clara's Varvana-Maryia Zlotnik, 6-1, 6-0. Tse blew past Cal Poly's Eliza Bates, 6-1, 6-1, Abouelsaad defeated San Francisco's Hana Gamracy, 6-2, 6-4, and Nakagawa needed three sets to defeat Portland's Aleksandra Dimitrjevic, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Kumhom posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Cal Poly's Peyton Dunkle.

Play resumes Saturday with second-round play in singles and doubles at the ITA Northwest Regionals.
