Cougars Fall at Utah, 4-3

SALT LAKE CITY (February 11, 2022) – The University of Utah captured four of six singles matches to defeat Washington State 4-3 in a nonconference women's tennis match Friday at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.

With the loss, the Cougars fall to 4-1 on the season while Utah improves to 8-0.

The Cougars secured the opening doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3. After WSU's Michaela Bayerlova and Maxine Murphy fell to Madison Tattini and Linda Huang at No. 1, the Cougar duo of Fifa Kumhom and Yang Lee captured a 6-4 win at No. 2 over Anastasia Goncharova and Emily Dush, pushing the deciding point to No. 3 There, WSU's Savanna Ly-Nguyen and Elyse Tse rallied for a 7-5 win over Katya Hersh and Lindsey Hung to clinch the opening point.

In singles action, Bayerlova quickly made it 2-0 as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Huang at No. 1. The win improves the Cougar senior's singles record to 7-0 this season. Utah captured the next three matches to take a 3-2 lead as Hung defeated Murphy 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, followed by Tattini's 6-2, 6-3 win over Kumhom at No. 5.

At No. 2, Dush defeated Ly-Nguyen, 6-4, 6-3, handing the Cougar senior her first dual loss of the season. WSU freshman Hania Abouelsaad evened the match at 3-3 as she rallied for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Anya Lamoreaux at No. 6, leaving the deciding point to court 4.

Tse rallied from 1-4 down in the first to take a 7-6 tiebreaker before Goncharova captured the second, 6-1. In the third, Tse jumped out to a 2-0 lead but could not capitalize any further as she fell 6-3 in the final set.

The Cougars are next in action Saturday when they face Minnesota in Salt Lake City. Match time is set for 11 a.m. PT
