Strong First Day for Cougars at ITA Northwest Regionals

STANFORD, Calif. (October 14, 2022) – The Washington State Tennis team had a solid opening day with two players advancing to the third round of plat at the 2022 ITA Northwest Regionals Saturday at the Taube Tennis Courts on the Stanford campus.
In singles action, sophomore Maxine Murphy and freshman Yura Nakagawa each posted a pair of victories Friday to reach Saturday's third round. Murphy opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Portland's Sally Pethybridge before upsetting No. 8-seed Sarah-Maude Fortin of Washington, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Nakagawa also recorded two wins, defeating San Francisco's Azaria Hayes 6-4, 6-2 in the first round before taking out #9-seed Iva Zelic of Portland, 7-5, 6-1.
Another Cougar freshman, Eva Alvarez Sande, opened her tournament with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Fresno State's Leann Serna. In the second round, Alvarez Sande fell to Stanford's Alexis Blokhina, seeded No. 6, in a tight match, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
The day began with doubles where the Cougars teamed to capture two of three matches. Kumhom and Tse paired to take an 8-6 win over Portland's Rimona Rouf and Aleksandra Dimitrijevic, while Yang Lee and Alvarez Sande cruised to an 8-3 victory over Portland State's Nika Beukers and Mariya Ponomareva.
Play continues Saturday at the ITA Northwest Regionals.
