Late-Inning Rally Held Off By Oregon
April 13, 2019 | Baseball
Â
The Cougars saw five players record multiple-hit games and freshman Kyle Manzardo drove in four runs including a three-run double as part of a six-run eighth inning. Oregon hit three home runs and held off the WSU rally after owning a 10-2 lead in the eighth.
Â
In the first, Dillon Plew led off with a single up the middle but was stranded at third to end the inning. In the third, Oregon took a 1-0 lead with a solo homer to right centerfield.
Â
In the fourth, a call went against WSU that resulted in two Oregon runs scoring. A fly ball to centerfield was seemingly caught for the third out but was fumbled on the throw back in and the umpires ruled that it was not a catch and a run scored on the play. Oregon pushed another run across after an error in the inning and later pushed the lead to 4-0 with a solo homer in the fifth.
Â
In the sixth, Oregon put the game out of reach with a grand slam for an 8-0 advantage. In the bottom of the inning, the Cougars pushed two runs across with an RBI-double to left-centerfield from Collin Montez and an RBI-single from Manzardo. Oregon added a pair of runs in the seventh for a 10-2 lead.
Â
In the eighth, the Cougars loaded the bases with nobody out and Manzardo pulled a double into the right-centerfield gap, clearing the bases and cutting the Oregon lead to 10-5. One batter later, Koby Blunt pulled a 1-1 pitch threw the left side for an RBI-single and cut the lead to 10-6. With two strikes on him and facing the Duck closer, Plew hammered a pitch into the right-centerfield gap and off the glove of the diving Oregon rightfielder to score two and make it 10-8.
Â
In the ninth, Oregon took advantage of a Cougar miscue as a ball got away from the catcher on a strikeout that would have been the second out, allowing the batter to reach first. The next batter doubled him home for an 11-8 lead.
