Cougars Host Pair of Top 15 Opponents in UCLA and USC

THIS WEEK: The Washington State Cougars (17-7, 2-5) welcome a pair of Top 15 opponents when No. 10 UCLA and No. 13 USC come to Pullman. The weekend begins with the Cougars hosting UCLA Friday, April 12 following by an 11 a.m. matchup Sunday against the Trojans. Both matches look to be played indoors at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse, though should weather conditions improve, the matches could move outside.

ABOUT UCLA: UCLA is ranked number 10 in the most recent ITA rankings and enter the match with a record of 14-5, 6-1 in Pac-12 play. The Bruins five losses have all come against teams currently ranked in the top 13. UCLA currently features three singles players ranked in the Top 100 of the ITA singles rankings, led by No. 25 Elysia Bolton and No. 38 Jada Hart. The Bruins also have four teams ranked in the top 70 in doubles.

ABOUT USC: The Trojans enter the week with a record of 16-4, 6-1 in conference action and a national ranking of No. 13. The Cougars defeated USC last season in Los Angeles, the only win in 25 meetings in the series. The Trojans currently have two singles players ranked, No. 46 Salma Ewing and No. 95 Angela Kulikov, while the doubles team of Kulikov and Rianna Valdes is ranked No. 10.

LAST TIME OUT: The Cougars dropped a close, 4-3, decision to No. 19 California in Berkeley. The Cougars received singles wins from Michaela Bayerlova, Aneta Miksovska and Melisa Ates.
 
UP NEXT: Following this weekend, the Cougars close out their 2019 regular season schedule by hosting No. 15 Washington, Saturday, April 20 at Noon. Prior to the match, seniors Aneta Miksovska and Tiffany Mylonas will be recognized for their contribution to Cougar Tennis.

ROAD WARRIORS: Washington State is 24 matches into the season and Friday's match at No. 5 Stanford marks the 15th match the Cougars have played on the road. With trips to Missoula, Mont., Stanford, Calif., Waco, Texas, West Lafayette, Ind. Spokane, Manhattan, Kan., Lincoln, Neb., Salt Lake City, Boulder, Colo. and Fresno, Calif., WSU will return from California having travelled more than 12,232 miles.
 
ITA RANKINGS: Washington State University women's tennis team is ranked No. 42 in the most recent ITA rankings. Earlier this year, WSU has held rankings of 36 (April 2), 35 (March 26), 33 (March 19), 36 (March 12), 28 (March 5), 31 (Feb. 26) and 15 (Feb. 19). The No. 15 ranking was the highest in program history. Additionally, Sophomore Michaela Bayerlova moved to No. 52 in the singles rankings, up from No. 57 two weeks prior.
 
MIKSOVSKA CLIMBING CAREER WINS LIST:  Cougar senior Aneta Miksovska enters the week with 95 career victories, in fourth place on the all-time wins list, one ahead of Ksenia Googe. Next up on the list is Elizaveta Luzina with 105 victories.

  • WSU is 15-0 when winning the opening doubles point.
  • Michaela Bayerlova is WSU's highest-ranking player at No. 52 in the most recent ITA Rankings. The Cougars sophomore is 5-2 against nationally-ranked players
  • WSU tennis has had three players ranked this season, Bayerlova, Tiffany Mylonas and Melisa Ates
 
COACH HART: Lisa Hart is in her 16th season as the head coach at Washington State. Hart has accumulated a WSU career record of 218-184 (.542) over her tenure, finishing the 2018 season with a 21-7 record.
