Cougars Fall at No. 1 Stanford, 4-0

STANFORD, Calif. – Washington State battled but did not have enough to overcome the nation's top-ranked team as No. 1 Stanford defeated Washington State Sunday in the second round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Stanford (2-0) jumped out early by captured the opening doubles point. Melissa Lord and Niluka Madurawe had no trouble with WSU's (6-1) Michaela Bayerlova and Aneta Miksovska, winning 6-0 at No. 3. The point was clinched when Caroline Lampl and Kimberly Yee, the nation's seventh-ranked duo, defeated Tiffany Mylonas and Hikaru Sato, 6-2, at No. 1. WSU's Melisa Ates and Yang Lee were leading No. 13 Emily Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon, 5-4, when play was stopped with the doubles point clinched.
In singles play Stanford flexed their muscle, taking the first set in all six matches. Arbuthnott, the nation's 16th-ranked player, was first off with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Savanna Ly-Nguyen at No. 4. Lord made it a 3-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sato at No. 2.
At No. 5, Stanford's Janice Shin, ranked No. 51, rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the second set to defeat Lee, 6-1, 6-4, clinching the win for the Cardinal.
The three remaining matches were stopped late in the second set. At No. 1, No. 83 Bayerlova was in a tough battle with No. 103 Gordon, trailing 2-6, 4-5. At No. 3, Mylonas had fought off a match point and was trailing Lampl, 3-6, 4-5. At No. 6, Miksovska was down 2-6, 2-5 to No. 38 Emma Higuchi.
The Cougars are next in action Feb. 8 when they travel to Waco, Texas to face Baylor, Friday, Feb. 8.
