Cougars Fall to No. 31 Huskies, 4-0

PULLMAN, Wash. – The 31st-ranked Washington Huskies posted a 4-0 victory over Washington State in the Cougars' final home match of the season at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts Saturday.

Prior to play, the Cougars recognized senior Victoria Matejevic, who was playing the final home match of her Cougar career.

The day opened with doubles where Washington (16-8, 5-5 Pac-12) needed a tiebreaker at No. 3 to pull out the point. At No. 1 Washington's Miki Kobayashi and Alexis Prokopuik defeated WSU's Aneta Miksovska and Matejevic, 6-2. The Cougars (10-15, 0-10) evened things when Barbora Michalkova and Melisa Ates posted a 6-4 win over Kenadi Hance and Stacy Fung at No.2, putting the point in the hands of No. 3. There, UW's Katarina Kopcalic and Lana Slavica escaped with a 7-6, 7-5 in the tiebreaker, win, giving the Huskies the 1-0 advantage heading into singles.

In singles action, the Huskies pushed the lead to 2-0 when Hance completed a 6-2, 6-0 win over Matejevic at No. 4. At No. 2, Kobayashi defeated Michalkova 6-3, 6-3 before Kopcalic defeated Tomey, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6, giving the Huskies the clinching win.

With the team outcome decided, the three remaining matches were halted. At No. 1 Yusupova was leading 6-2, 1-4 against Fung, the nation's No. 32-ranked player. At No. 3, Miksovska was trailing Nour Abbes, 6-4, 4-1, while Ates leading Prokopuik, 6-4, 3-1 at No. 5.

The Cougars will compete in the 2017 Pac-12 Tennis Championship beginning Wednesday in Ojai, Calif. For the first time, the championship will be a team format, with championships draws announced Sunday.
