Cougars Post 4-0 Victory over Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Washington State captured three singles matches to complete a 4-0 victory over Santa Clara Friday morning at the Degheri Tennis Center.

With the win, the Cougars snap a nine-match skid and improve to 10-12 on the season. The Broncos fall to 5-8 overall.

The Cougars opened the day by taking the doubles point as the No. 1 duo of Aneta Miksovska and Victoria Matejevic jumped out early then held on late to defeat Daniella Silva and Madison Clarke, 7-6. The WSU pair raced to a 4-0 lead before Santa Clara bounced back to take a 6-5 lead. The other two doubles matches split, WSU winning at 2 and the Broncos win at 3, the top doubles would decide the opening point. After forcing a tiebreaker, WSU's top team capitalized on its third match point to take the breaker, 7-5, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead heading into singles action.

In singles action, WSU quickly made it 2-0 as Tomey breezed past Ong at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Miksovska completed a 6-1, 6-2 win over Farah at No. 3 while Ates clinched the team victory with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Frankel at No. 5.

The three remaining matches were stopped once the team win was secure. At No. 1, Michalkova was into the third set against Clarke, trailing 2-6, 6-2, 1-4, while Yusupova lost a first-set tiebreaker and was trailing 6-7, 0-1 at No. 2. At No. 4, Matejevic was locked in a tight second set against El Tawil but battling back, down 3-6, 3-4.

The Cougars continue their doubleheader Friday when they travel to No. 10 Stanford Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
