Cougars Fall to Kansas State, 4-3

DENTON, Texas – Washington State captured the opening doubles point but could not capitalize on the early advantage as Kansas State won four of six singles matches for a 4-3 victory Saturday at the Waranch Tennis Complex. With the loss the Cougars fall to 6-3 on the season.

In doubles play, WSU's No. 2 pair of Aneta Miksovska and Lejla Colic pulled out a 7-6 victory over Mellie Stretton and Ana Garcia Navas to clinch the opening point. After getting a break at 5-5, the duo dropped a set point in the next game, which forced a tiebreaker, where WSU won 7-5. The cougars jumped out quick winning at No. 3 as Guzal Yusupova and Melisa Ates won 6-0 over Iva Bago and Livia Cirnu. Kansas State event the doubles when Carolina Costamagna and Ines Mesquita defeated Barbora Michalkova and Victoria Matejevic, 6-3.

Kansas State tied the match at 1-1 when Mesquita posted a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Matejevic at No. 3. The Cougars responded as Colic defeated Maria Panaite, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6.

Costamagna tied the match as she completed a three-set, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 victory over Michalkova at No. 1.Ates gave WSU a 3-2 lead as she rallied for a three-set win over Cirnu, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 5. Yusupova rallied from a set down to force a third, but could not hold a 5-4 lead and fell 7-6, 3-6, 7-5. That set the stage for No 4 singles, where Garcia Navas rallied to win a second-set tiebreaker before pulling away in the third for a 5-7, 7-6, 6-1 win over Miksovska to clinch the match.

The Cougars conclude their Texas swing Sunday when they face North Texas. Match time is set for 10 a.m., PT.
