Cougars Sweep First Day of Play at Beach Fall Tournament

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Washington State tennis swept all eight matches to cap an undefeated first day of play at the 2017 Beach Fall Tournament Friday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.

In No. 1 singles draw, senior Barbora Michalkova posted a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Monika Van de Vondel, a junior from CSU Northridge, after pulling away following a close first set. Within the same flight junior Tiffany Mylonas posted a strong 6-0, 6-0 win against UC Irvine's Flora Amiri.

WSU junior Aneta Miksovka played a consistent match against CSU Fullerton's Masako Makiba, concluding the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Sophomore Melisa Ates received a BYE in the first round of No. 3 singles, but played an ouot-of-bracket match where she rallied from a first set deficit against Vivian Dvali of UC Irvine to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. All four singles players advance to the semifinals of their respective flights.

In doubles action, Ates and Michalkova advance to the semifinals of the No. 1 doubles flight after a 6-0 victory over the UC Riverside pair of Karla Dulay and Tia Elpusan, and a 6-1 win over Portland State's Eszter Zador and Brianna Thompson. In the No. 2 doubles flight, Mylonas and Miksovska also advanced to the semifinals after posting a 6-1 win against the UC Irvine pair of Gillian Parker and Clair Dean, followed by a 6-2 win over UC Riverside's Lauren Wolfe and Tamilla Vaksman. Both WSU team proceed to the semifinals of the doubles flights on Saturday.

Play resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Beach Fall Tournament for both singles and doubles.
