Cougars Have Solid First Day at Wildcat Invitational

TUCSON, Arizona --Â Washington State tennis captured ten of its11 matches to begin the Wildcat Invitational Friday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

In No. 1 singles draw, freshmen Michaela Bayerlova defeated Hsiang-Wen of New Mexico with a strong 6-2, 6-1 victory. In the same flight, junior Tiffany Mylonas posted a win against New Mexico's Diana Wong after going into a tie breaker the first set, eventually winning 7-5, 6-4. Sophomore Guzal Yusupova ended the first day of the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Andrea Amortegui from Marquette in the top singles flight. All three players advance to Saturday's semifinals.

In the second singles flight, senior Barbora Michalkova defeated New Mexico's Hsiang-Wen Huang after losing the first set, finishing strong with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory. In the same flight, sophomore Melisa Ates won her match against Diana Wong of New Mexico, 7-5, 6-4, needing a tiebreaker in the first set. WSU junior Aneta Miksovska defeated Arizona's Sophia Thomas in straight sets, winning 6-2, 7-5. All three players from Washington State will continue to semifinals within the second flight.

In the No. 3 singles flight, sophomore Ege Tomey lost to Marquette's Isabella Franks 3-6, 1-6.

In doubles play, Yusupova and Bayerlova faced New Mexico's Diana Wong and Danielle Quevedo, posting a strong 6-0 victory in the No. 1 doubles draw. In the same flight, the pair of Michalkova and Ates won 6-0 against Arizona's Sophia Thomas and Taylor Tamblyn.

In No. 2 doubles, Miksovska and Mylonas defeated New Mexico's Bronte Murgett and Lauren Riche with a strong 6-2 victory. In the same flight, Tomey was paired with Marquette's Isabella Franks and captured a 6-3 win against the UNM duo of Yue Lin Chen and Jaci Fulgenzi. All doubles teams will continue to the semifinals.
