Cougars Roll in 7-0 Victory over Montana

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State continued its strong start to the spring campaign after defeating Montana, 7-0, Saturday morning at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. With the win the Cougars improve to 3-0 on the season.

WSU had little trouble capturing the opening doubles point. At No. 2 doubles Victoria Matejevic and Melisa Ates cruised to a 6-0 victory over Cat Orfanos and Milica Panic. Guzal Yusupova and Barbora Michalkova followed with the clinching double point after a 6-1 win over Hannah Sulz and Lidia Dukic at No. 1. The third doubles was stopped with WSU's Lejla Colic and Ege Tomey leading 5-3 against Nathalie Joanlanne and Stanzi Stuijt.

The Cougars jumped out quick in singles to take control of the match. Michalkova made it a 2-0 lead as she posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Dukic at No. 2. Matejevic followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Orfanos, putting WUS one win away from victory.

Yusupova provided the clinching win as she started quick then held on for the 6-0, 7-5 win over Sulz at No. 1. Colic rallied from a set down at No. 4 to post a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Joanlanne, increasing the lead to 5-0.

The final two matches saw Ates cruise to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Stuijt at No. 5 and Tomey closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Panic at No. 6.

The Cougars return to the courts later today when they host Montana State at 4 p.m.
