Cougars Dominant in Season Opener

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State tennis team opened its 2017 dual season in convincing fashion with a 7-0 victory against Seattle, Saturday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

The day began with doubles play as the Cougars quickly captured the opening point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 2, Melisa Ates and Victoria Matejevic posted a 6-0 win over Barbara Carey and Madison Maloney, while Lejla Colic and Aneta Miksovska clinched the point with a 6-0 win over Majidah Cochran and Kailyn Skjonsby at the No. 3 position. At No. 1, the Cougar duo of Barbora Michalkova and Guzal Yusupova led Michelle Lui and Kali McCollister, 4-2, when the match was stopped.

In singles action, Matejevic quickly made it 2-0 as she had little trouble with Carey at No. 3, winning 6-0, 6-1. At No. 4. Colic followed close behind as she posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over McCollister, giving WSU a 3-0 lead.

At No. 1, Yusupova clinched the match for the Cougars as she defeated Lui in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. At No. 2, Michalkova defeated Maloney 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, to give Washington State the 5-0 advantage.

Ates easily defeated Audrey Scott at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0. Ege Tomey closed out the match at No. 6 with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 victory over Caroline Maltby, completing the Cougar sweep.

The 7-0 victory against Seattle marks the 12th-straight year the Cougars began the season with a victory and fourth-straight year with an opening day sweep.
